Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia (formerly known as Summerbridge) is a six-year academic enrichment program that builds a path from middle school to college for low-income students from Philadelphia and Camden. Breakthrough also inspires talented high school and college students to become educators and engaged citizens by giving them responsibility for teaching in the program. Breakthrough provides rigorous academic enrichment for students from 7th through 12th grades through summer and after-school programs; it also provides high school and college admissions support and counseling. College and high school students from around the country serve as intern teachers in the program. Breakthrough emphasizes academic excellence, family involvement, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and diversity. POSITION OVERVIEW
Breakthrough is seeking professional Mentor Teachers in Humanities, Math and Science for its 2011 summer session. Mentor Teachers work 30-35 hours per week during the nine-week summer session from June 13 – Friday, August 12 (2 weeks of faculty training; six weeks of program; and one week of wrap up and evaluation. See schedule, below). They help prepare, train, and supervise our college-student intern teachers, which contributes significantly to our students’ success. Mentor teachers will be assigned to one of Breakthrough’s three summer program sites: Saint Joseph’s University, Germantown Friends School, and Drexel University. Mentor teachers report to the site director or program director at their site.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Participate in pre-program trainings for mentor teachers and intern teachers Oversee instruction in two subjects (Writing Through Literature and Social Studies for Humanities mentor teachers, and one core subject area plus one elective for Math and Science mentor teachers) Help create scope and sequence for given subject based on a list of skill standards and content Work with core subject and elective teachers to develop, revise, and implement daily lesson plans Train and support teacher interns to implement Breakthrough lesson plans effectively Maintain deadlines for lesson plan submission and ensure their fidelity to Breakthrough teaching model Provide teachers with written/verbal feedback on daily lesson plans and accompanying documents Lead additional training sessions and workshops in key areas of teaching throughout the nine-week program Observe classes at a minimum of twice a week and conference with teachers after each observation providing feedback on teaching methods and classroom managements Facilitate weekly department faculty meetings Communicate and work closely with Site Director to ensure progress of students and teacher Assist with editing end-of-summer student evaluations Write mid- and end-of-summer evaluations of departmental/elective teachers Be available for teachers to provide feedback and support during work hours Be fully engaged in the Breakthrough community, sharing our passion for teaching, learning, and leading

QUALIFICATIONS Three years teaching experience Commitment to and passion for teaching Outstanding knowledge of subject matter and broad knowledge of available resources Flexible approach to pedagogy Ability to work with students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds Ability to deliver specific, positive, constructive, and honest feedback, both written and verbal Outstanding presentation, writing, and organizational skills Creativity, energy and commitment to excellence Flexibility, ability to multi-task between several different projects Excellent interpersonal skills, love of mentoring Professionalism

SCHEDULE April/May: Mentor Teacher Orientation Early June: Periodic contact with teachers over email/phone June 13–24: Teacher orientation June 27–August 5: Summer program (Mentor teachers work Monday-Thursday) Aug. 9—August 12: Faculty Assessment, Program Wrap Up, and Evaluation
