Inside-Out, piloted in 1997 with the support of the Philadelphia Prison System and Temple University, is a 15-week academic course, wherein 15-18 “outside” (undergraduate) students and the same number of “inside” (incarcerated) students attend class together inside prison.  All participants read a variety of texts and write several papers. During class sessions, students discuss issues in small and large groups; and, in the final month of the class, students work together on a class project.

Inside-Out has developed classes through more than 200 universities and prisons across the country, with at least 8,000 “inside” and “outside” students having participated in the program. In addition, instructors hailing from 37 states and abroad have taken part in an Inside-Out training.  Inside-Out’s growing national network is made up of instructors in many different disciplines from over 120 institutions, who are taking this pedagogy forward in very diverse correctional settings and institutions (state prisons, county jails, federal prisons, work release centers, etc.).

The Inside-Out Training Institute is a comprehensive 7-day, 60-hour intensive training program that covers everything necessary to develop a course in the Inside-Out model:  curriculum development, setting parameters, institutional relationships, group dynamics, interactive pedagogical approaches, and much more.  It is an opportunity to learn this transformative educational method through hands-on experience, dialogue, and engagement with a working group inside Graterford Prison, a large maximum-security facility an hour outside of Philadelphia (or Ryan Correctional Facility, in the case of the training to be held in Michigan). Training will be followed by consultation to assist in on-site program development.
