Organization Overview:
Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia (formerly known as Summerbridge) is a six-year academic enrichment program that builds a path from middle school to college for low-income students from Philadelphia and Camden. Breakthrough also inspires talented high school and college students to become educators and engaged citizens by giving them responsibility for teaching in the program.
Breakthrough provides rigorous academic enrichment for students from 7th through 12th grades through summer and after-school programs; it also provides high school and college admissions support and counseling. College and high school students from around the country serve as intern teachers in the program. Breakthrough emphasizes academic excellence, family involvement, leadership, teamwork, creativity, and diversity. Position Overview:
This is a part-time position, 30 hours per week. The Program Assistant oversees the after-school program and provides logistical and administrative support to the middle school program site directors. It requires working until 6pm, Monday through Thursday when the after-school program is in session in the fall and the spring. The Program Assistant reports to the Executive Director and also works closely with and takes direction from the middle school Site Directors.
Responsibilities:
• Coordination of after-school programs, including:
o Volunteer recruitment & supervision
o Logistics and planning
o Day-to-day oversight of the program
o Attendance monitoring
o Parent communication
• Administrative support for middle school program, including:
o Mailings
o Phone calls
o Scheduling
o Event coordination
o Photocopying
o Filing
o Data entry
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Three to five years experience in education or youth development
• Experience working directly with adolescents
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
• Proven management and organizational skills; ability to initiate and follow through on complex projects
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• High energy, flexibility, and sense of humor under pressure
• Access to a personal car
