Household Food Security in the United States, 2009
According to the survey data released annually by the USDA, almost 15 percent of American households were food insecure at some point during 2009 – meaning that they did not have reliable access to sufficient food for the entire household over the course of the year. This figure includes 5.7 percent of American households with very low food security, whose eating patterns were disrupted at times because the household lacked money and other resources for food. Levels of food security essentially held steady from 2008 to 2009; many groups point to the success of the SNAP program in preventing those numbers from rising during the economic downturn.
