Description of Position: BPSOS – Delaware Valley is the local affiliate of a national community-based organization serving primarily Vietnamese-American refugees and immigrants. Our mission is to empower, organize, and equip Vietnamese individuals and communities in their pursuit of liberty and dignity.
Our Asian Youth Empowerment Project (AYEP) engages and trains Vietnamese American and immigrant youth to become leaders, critical thinkers, and develop knowledge and skills to work for social change within communities.
The AYEP Organizer/Advocate will work with community partners on our School Violence Prevention Initiative to develop youth leadership skills to proactively respond to school and bullying in non-violent ways that reform the school environment and build community. The Initiative trains youth to investigate social conditions in their communities, analyze issues, articulate their ideas, and work with others for social change. The Organizer will work with youth to run a service project that addresses community needs and builds relationships. Activities will include workshops and training sessions as well as planning and implementing a service project or campaign. Past projects have included organizing Vietnamese immigrant youth to end anti-Asian, anti-immigrant violence in South Philadelphia High School.
Job Responsibilities:
. Train youth to become effective advocates and organizers.
. Work with youth to identify and research issues that are potential organizing campaigns.
. Work with youth to organize people and carry out a campaign.
. Develop and conduct skills building trainings for youth.
. Develop workshops, speakers and trainings for youth staff to help them learn about the issues facing youth in their communities and other communities.
. Oversee planning and implementation of a youth community service project.
. Recruit and engage volunteer committee members to support the project.
. Maintain records for grant reporting purposes and institutional memory.
. Perform administrative and related tasks such as developing youth job descriptions, conducting outreach, hiring youth, maintaining youth personnel files and timesheets, and carrying out correspondence.
. Collaborate with and support BPSOS staff on administrative and other tasks as needed.
Location: Philadelphia, PA.
AYEP Orgnizer/Advocate will work 20 hours per week.
Additional Qualifications:
Applicants must be committed to working for social change and have experience doing activist, community or grassroots organizing work (either professionally or as a volunteer). Applicants must also be familiar with issues facing Asian American communities and be committed to working with youth in the Asian American community. Excellent communication skills, as well as supervision and organizing skills, are required. Flexibility and willingness to learn from your experience and from others is required. Bilingual ability in Vietnamese is preferred but not required. Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends.
