Asian Americans United exists so that people of Asian ancestry in Philadelphia exercise leadership to build our communities and unite to challenge oppression. AAU is seeking a bilingual (Mandarin/English) Chinese Immigrant Youth Organizer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Training youth to become effective advocates and organizers.
+ Working with youth to identify and research issues that are potential organizing campaigns.
+ Working with youth to organize people and carry out a campaign.
+ Developing and conducting skills building, issue-based, and anti-oppression trainings for youth.
+ Exposing youth to diverse communities and their issues and building alliances
• Creating a culturally and linguistically supportive environment that strengthens Chinese immigrant youths’ confidence in expressing their concerns and ideas and in working for change.
• Engaging youth in analyzing community needs and in serving their communities.
• Building AAU and AAU membership through establishing and maintaining relationships with community members we serve and organize.
+ Conducts (in collaboration with staff) outreach activities to broaden AAU’s membership base and to increase the active involvement of members in the work of the organization.
• Seeking the involvement of, drawing on the resources of, and engaging volunteer committee members in supporting the project.
• Maintaining records of the project for grants reporting purposes, program evaluation and improvement, archival purposes, and for the use of future staff.
• Performing administrative, logistical, and all other tasks related to the project.
• Coordinating the SPHS Asian Students’ Advocates (SASA) and the collaborative safe schools youth project.
• Collaborating with other staff members in performing general tasks for AAU and AAU projects.
HOURS AND SALARY are negotiable. 3/4 – full time position.
Additional Qualifications:
• Committed to working for social change;
• A minimum of two years experience doing activist, community or grassroots organizing work (either professionally or on a volunteer basis);
• Familiarity with issues facing Asian American communities;
• Passion for working with youth;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Demonstrated excellence in organizing;
• Flexibility and willingness to learn from experience and from others is required;
• Fluency (including reading and writing) in Mandarin and English is required. Fluency in Fujianese, Cantonese or other dialects is helpful;
• Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends.
