The Free Library of Philadelphia seeks nominations and applications for the position of Executive Director of the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy (MCOL).

The Executive Director is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership to all aspects of the MCOL.  S/he is responsible for mobilizing citizen, corporate, philanthropic, government and media entities to support the development of effective partnerships which successfully coordinate and integrate adult literacy programs into the various workforce training initiatives throughout Philadelphia. The Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership to create, evaluate and support a fully-operational system of literacy services throughout the city.  S/he will establish effective centralized reporting mechanisms and strategies for the sharing of best practices.

The Executive Director oversees and directs a staff of fourteen and has financial responsibility for a budget of approximately $6.3M.  Additionally, the Executive Director will lead a Commission (Board) named by Mayor Michael Nutter.  The Commission is charged with addressing the need for more effective literacy programs, accelerated GED and adult diploma acquisition, postsecondary transition of literacy program graduates, and the development of data and management systems to track students and assess program quality and return on investment.

Qualified candidates will have several years of leadership, management and fiscal experience.  Candidates must demonstrate a track record as an innovative leader capable of designing and facilitating creative solutions to impact and greatly improve literacy outcomes in Philadelphia.  Candidates must have the ability and desire to work collaboratively with wide-ranging constituents.  Experience working with volunteer leadership is preferred.  Candidates must evidence the ability to cultivate and solicit resources, including but not limited to financial resources, volunteer commitments, and corporate, foundation and other business support.  Candidates must have exceptional written and verbal skills, in addition to demonstrated presentation skills.  BA/BS required, graduate degree preferred.
