New Book: Community Land Trust Reader
Posted by on August 27, 2010
As the Shared Equity Homeownership movement gains momentum, many excellent sources of information about the individual program types-including community land trusts-are becoming available. There are now over 200 CLTs in the US and many in Europe, Africa and Asia. A new book, The Community Land Trust Reader, edited by National Housing Institute research fellow John Davis, brings together for the first time the seminal texts that inspired and defined the modern-day CLT. The book offers a deep understanding of the origins and evolution of the CLT model, as well as the challenges and opportunities likely to affect the growth of CLTs worldwide.
The Community Land Trust Reader
Edited by John Emmeus Davis
“Forty years ago, the Civil Rights movement in the South gave birth to the community land trust. The nation’s first CLT, New Communities Inc., was created to help African American farmers and their families gain economic independence in a turbulent time…Having been a part of New Communities at the beginning, I always hoped for the day when CLTs might be implemented nationally. From what I see in The Community Land Trust Reader, it would seem that day has finally arrived.”
-Mtamanika Youngblood, President/CEO, Sustainable Neighborhood Development Strategies, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia
“We’ve recently seen an immensely damaging housing bubble that was built on speculation suddenly burst, with disastrous results not just for our national economy, but for individual homeowners and renters…The Community Land Trust Reader shows us there is a more equitable way of keeping land-based resources available, affordable, and secure for people who need them the most.”
-Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont
