Real World Math: Engaging Students through Global Issues

Engage Your Students in Math Using Real World Data
Imagine a math class where:
* Geometric and trigonometric functions are used to optimize solar panel placement while learning about renewable energy.
* Algebraic equations are used to complete a loan application while learning about microcredit and poverty.
Real World Math: Engaging Students through Global Issues uses real world data to teach foundational algebra and geometry. It does this in the context of current issues like climate change, youth conflict, sustainable design, financial literacy, and solar energy.

The teacher’s guide and corresponding student workbook contain 15 lessons on topics that make mathematics purposeful and engage your students in exploring how math helps us to better understand complex issues and make more informed decisions.
Lessons include:
* Activity-based lesson ‘hooks’ that grab students’ interest
* Alignment with all 50 U.S. state math standards accessible in our online database
* Lesson correlations to the most widely used U.S. mathematics textbooks
* Free to download Excel and TI-Nspire datasets for select lessons
* Opportunities for students to think critically and collaborate
* Real-world data from organizations like the U.S. Census, Centers for Disease Control, Energy Information Agency, and the Population Reference Bureau
The corresponding Real World Math student workbook includes lesson handouts, supplemental worksheets, and topical background readings that directly connect with the lessons in the teacher’s guide.
Join us this September for our Real World Math Webinar. In this webinar you will learn more about how you can use Real World Math to engage your students and increase their understanding of foundational algebraic and geometric concepts. Hear from Facing the Future staff and classroom teachers about ways to use this research-based teacher’s guide and student textbook to support the development math skills through highly engaging real-world investigations of current global issues. Sign-up to receive a registration reminder about this webinar (click on the Professional Development tab).
