2010 English as a Second Language Conference

Registration is now open for the 2010 English as a Second Language Conference (ESL) being held at the Hilton Harrisburg, One North Second Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101 on June 21-22, 2010. The theme of this year’s conference is “Assuring Academic Achievement for English Language Learners through the Standards Aligned System” and is being sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in partnership with the Center for Schools and Communities.

The conference will bring together teachers, school administrators, school board members, ESL content and migrant educators and policy-makers. The conference will focus on the PDE’s Standards Aligned System (SAS) and will support school districts as they work to strengthen the education of English Language Learners (ELLs) through general sessions and instructional best practice workshops. Conference workshops will fall into four instructional strands: the standards aligned system; effective instructional teaching; resiliency; and collaboration.

Aida Walqui, Ph.D., Director of WestEd’s Teacher Professional Development Program in San Francisco, CA will be a keynote speaker this year.

The cost for the two day conference is $100 per person through May 31, 2010. This includes registration fees, sessions and conference-related meals. A discounted conference rate of $60 is available through May 7, 2010; after May 31, 2010 the cost will be $140. A one day rate is also available. Act 48 professional development credits will be offered.
