Write Away’s “Empower Hour” Monthly Virtual Speaker Series – Sep 3

Posted by Write Away on August 25, 2020

Write Away is on a mission to close the digital divide by creating opportunities for learners of all ages to use digital tools for writing and expression. This is especially important now as many school districts have announced that their fall semester will be fully virtual – equity and access issues that existed before are in plain sight, and the consequences of the digital divide seem all the more urgent to address.

During each Write Away’s Empower Hour, our featured speaker leads participants through the life experiences, realizations, and frameworks that led to their successes, failures, and overall growth.

Speakers share a visual story of their career journey while using interactive activities or questions to expand what participants believe is possible in the digital space and in their own vocational paths.

Our second Empower Hour will feature Chevon Boone. Chevon is an Assistant Professor of Practice at Relay Graduate School of Education, where she instructs, advises, and supports teaching residents in Washington, DC. She is also a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins University, studying the correlation of teacher retention and student achievement, with a focus on how to best support students in Title I Schools. Prior to joining higher ed, Chevon taught middle school English-Language Arts in Washington, DC and Newark, NJ. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education and a B.A. in Health & Societies from the University of Pennsylvania. As a proud first generation college graduate, Chevon seeks to empower others to take charge of their own narrative and dismantle systems not designed to uplift historically marginalized communities.
