Top of the Class is a morale-boosting event which celebrates high school students whom are on track to graduate, and exemplify excellence in their schools. PhillyGoes2College hosts this annual event to shine a light on education success stories in Philadelphia. Amidst the current climate of continuously scaled back resources, the parade reminds its participants, and onlookers, that our students are persevering and showing so much promise as future leaders of our city.

The annual PhillyGoes2College event kicks off with students congregating at the corner of Broad and Washington Streets, where they dance and celebrate with their peers and families before they parade down Broad Street, led by a police escort and drum line. Among the participants are Mayor Nutter, and many members of his staff, along with School District Superintendent Dr. Hite, whom all proudly don PhillyGoes2College t-shirts and march to City Hall, where the event culminates in a celebration and presentation of awards in the courtyard. Many Top of the Class volunteers and staff look forward to this event as a highlight of their year—a reminder of why they continue to work so hard to improve education in Philadelphia.

The Mayor’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence is a $5,000 scholarship for high school seniors in Philadelphia who have been accepted into college and complete an essay. One winner will be chosen for the Mayor’s Scholarship and four runners-up will also be given a generous prize. All winners will be recognized at the Top of the Class event.
