volunteers needed, OneWebDay Philly

Posted by on September 7, 2009

Please volunteer for our OneWebDay Philly technology service project! In an effort to connect technologists and those on the wrong side of the digital divide, we are organizing internet trainings at four Philadelphia Housing Authority developments. Each training requires just two hours of your time, and curricula will be provided. RSVP to gwenlisa@gmail.com

We will host two separate workshops on each Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Thursday, Sept. 24 at the following developments:

1. Harrison Plaza, 1240 N. 10th Street
2. Norris Apartments, 1914 N. 11th Street
3. Whitehall Apartments, 1824-1826 Foulkrod Street

Wed., Sept. 23, from 1pm to 3pm–The workshops are geared toward adult residents. They will cover the basics of how to use Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools that PHA residents have heard of but never used. The trainings will also focus on “media literacy,” or websites parents might want to be aware of if their kids are visiting them.

Wed., Sept. 23, from 4pm to 6pm–The workshops will be geared toward teens and adults. The content will focus on homework help and college prep resources (local college websites and applying for financial aid online).

Thurs., Sept. 24, from 1pm to 3pm–The workshops will be geared toward adults. The content will focus on employment searching resources, job training websites and free online computer tutorials.

Thurs., Sept. 24, from 4pm to 6pm–The workshops will be geared toward kids and adults. The content will focus on educational games and other online educational resources. A representative from the school district will be invited to explain FamilyNet.

4. Emlem Arms, 6733 Emlem Street

Wed., Sept. 23, from 10am to noon and again from 1pm to 3pm–This workshop will be geared toward senior citizens. The content will teach residents the basics of setting up an email address and downloading photos. Trainers will also introduce residents to websites of interest (health resources, Septa schedules, Google maps, etc.).
