Volunteers Needed, After School Activities Partnerships

Posted by on June 26, 2004

ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships is in need of volunteers to lead clubs for children at schools, recreation centers and community centers throughout Philadelphia this summer and this coming school year. With the support of ASAP, volunteers lead clubs for one hour each week around recreational activities of their choice at a location convenient to their home or office.

Since its inception, ASAP has launched 205 clubs on activities as varied as art, basketball, music, language arts, gardening, yoga, chess, dance and tennis.

The after school hours are the most dangerous for young people. This is the time when kids get into trouble and are victims?the greatest frequency of violence occurring 3-4 pm. With more than 60% of parents working outside the home, large numbers of youngsters are unsupervised for 20-25 hours weekly. Many are home alone, watching TV and snacking – detrimental to both health and fitness.

If you are interested in volunteering for one hour per week at a site accessible to you, please contact Meghan LeCates, Volunteer Coordinator, at 215.875.7024 or mlecates@phillyasap.org.

Volunteers are welcome to lead clubs with partners, as well!

Thank you for your consideration.

ASAP’s mission is to rally the Greater Philadelphia region in a broad campaign to increase supervised after school programs for kids of all ages. We recruit volunteers to assist existing programs and organize new after school clubs and programs as driven by their interests and the needs of the community. Further, we seek to organize and make available information on after school recreation programs to increase awareness and accessibility.
