About This Organization

The Immigrant Defense Project works to secure fairness and justice for immigrants in the United States.

We aim to abolish a racially biased criminal legal system that violates basic human rights and an immigration system that every year tears hundreds of thousands of immigrants with convictions from their homes, their families, and their communities.

We fight to end the current era of unprecedented mass deportation via interconnected strategies that attack the two systems at multiple points — strengthening immigrant defense through training and expert advice; challenging unfair laws through impact litigation; shaping just policies through advocacy; and empowering communities and advocates through alliance building and education, and changing negative perceptions about immigrants through communications and messaging.

We help lay the groundwork for a day when the criminal and immigration laws of the United States respect and uphold the human rights of everyone.

Design – Manual design

Design a manual for people in immigration detention.

We have developed the content for a written legal orientation guide for people detained by ICE in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester, but we need it to be formatted and designed in such a way that is accessible. Immigrants in detained deportation proceedings are not guaranteed lawyers. However, the New York City detained immigration court has a universal representation program–the first of its kind in the country. If a detained person can’t afford a private attorney, they get a free one.

However, a big issue is that many detained individuals who are eligible for free representation are not aware of this and are usually in detention for months before their first court date, which is when the attorney would be appointed. We are developing a written legal orientation guide to give detained individuals critical information about what to expect in their immigration proceedings and whether they are eligible for free representation. The Immigrant Defense Project, along with Make the Road New York and the New Sanctuary Coalition, have committed to completing this resource, with input and approval from the three organizations that provide the free representation to immigrants in detained court. Once the manual is final, we will distribute them in the jails where people are detained.

This project can be done remotely.
