LOVE & LOGIC: LOW STRESS STRATEGIES FOR HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL EDUCATORS

Research shows us about 10% of students are difficult to manage in the classroom. This workshop will discuss the latest research on how generational poverty drives a child’s behavior, what teachers should expect, why traditional discipline methods don’t work. We will discuss how to manage and prevent disruptions through techniques described for the Love & Logic Classroom. Each of the 9 essential skills for the Love and Logic Classroom will be presented. The Love and Logic strategies are quick to learn, and prevent many interventions for discipline.

TEACHING DIVERSITY: EDUCATING TO END PREJUDICE

What sets this country apart from others is our diversity and our freedom. We are a nation of differences, from our races and cultures to our political views and personalities. Today’s classrooms are as diverse as the world around us, and as educators we need to understand the differences among our students. Cultural differences can create misunderstandings, and sometimes can turn to teasing, bullying and even physical violence. Through our workshop, you’ll learn how to incorporate multiculturalism and diversity into your curriculum. Turn your classroom into a tool for positive change!

LEARNING DISABILITIES: PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR THE CLASSROOM
APRIL 17, 2010    9am-3:30pm
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) occurs in approximately 3 – 7 % of children and continues to be a disorder which poses a challenge for educators to both understand and accommodate. Based on current ADHD research, this course provides an overview of the major characteristics of ADHD, its subtypes, etiology, and treatment (including medication); and offers strategies to support elementary ADHD students in the regular classroom. This program will also consider some major trends and unresolved issues in the field of Learning Disabilities.

CYBER EMPOWERMENT: PREVENTING CYBER-BULLYING, ABUSE, AND EXPLOITATION
APRIL 17, 2010    9am-3:30pm
Cyber-bullying is becoming the new #1 school problem and affecting your classroom environment. This workshop explores how some electronic communications and online social networking are opportunities for bullying, bias crimes and violence amongst students. While these workshops were created in cooperation with the Cyber-Crimes investigation unit of the NJ State Police, the presentation goes beyond stories of strangers lurking on the internet to catch unsuspecting children. Instead, Cyber-Empowerment promotes educators’ understanding of cyber activity of youth while teaching realistic ways to help students keep their own rights and guard the rights of others in the cyber-sphere. Offered in partnership with ICAP.
