CONFERENCE KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Arthur Chickering
Special assistant to the President at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, Dr. Arthur Chickering is author of several publications, including Education and Identity, Getting the Most Out of College and co-author of Encouraging Authenticity and Spirituality in Higher Education. Dr. Chickering has written and presented extensively on assessment in higher education.

PURPOSE
This one day conference will bring together faculty, staff, administrators, community partners, and students to expand the research, teaching, learning, and practice of spirituality and civic engagement in higher education.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PROGRAM PROPOSALS

Conference participants are invited to submit proposals for papers or workshop presentations. Each paper and workshop presenter will have 30-45 minutes for presentation and questions. Audio visual and computer projection equipment will be made available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The deadline for submitting proposals for the conference is July 31, 2006. Accepted proposals will be announced soon after. All presenters are required to register for the conference.

>From the proposals submitted, Visiting Faculty Fellow Jon Dalton will be soliciting papers to be published in the November issue of the Journal of College and Character (JCC) that will focus on the theme of “Connecting Faith and Service in Higher Education.” The Journal (http://www.Collegevalues.org) is published on the internet by the Center for the Study of Values in College Student Development at Florida State University.

Possible proposal topics include, but are not limited to:
*Curricular and co-curricular initiatives designed to encourage moral and civic learning
*Institutional commitments to educating students for responsible democratic citizenship
*Creating college environments that foster civic values and spiritual growth as outcomes of student learning and development
*Building intra- and interfaith capacity on campus
*Promoting lifelong commitments to service and political engagement
*Innovative programs and activities that connect students’ faith commitments and inner convictions to the idea and practice of leadership, service, and civic responsibility
*Empirical research, challenges, and effective practices of service-learning and mutually reciprocal higher ed-community partnerships
*Courses, programs, and research that address the challenge of promoting sustained political engagement and active citizenship for students and alumni
*Building intra- and interfaith capacity on campus
*Moving with acts of service to social change
*Civic and spiritual programs that promote vocation and meaning-making
*Exploration of faith traditions that inform service-learning and civic responsibility
*Assessing civic engagement inside and outside the classroom
*Encouraging spirituality in higher education
*Integrating faith, leadership, service, and civic responsibility
