STANDARDS FOR MIDDLE AND SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY COACHES

Faced with an influx of needy readers whose skills are inadequate for content mastery, teachers in middle and secondary schools need help. One potential solution is to use a literacy coach to extend the expertise of content area teachers to adolescent literacy. Literacy coaching, a model adopted by many successful Reading First programs, is highly targeted professional development that can be a particularly potent vehicle for improving reading skills. By defining the role and responsibilities of the literacy coach and by identifying literacy components in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, “Standards for Middle and High School Literacy Coaches” provides a guide for a complex intervention aimed at a new level of students.
