The Fall PHENND Meeting featuring youth sports programs

The Fall PHENND Meeting is a chance for the entire PHENND Network to get together to share ideas, events, difficulties, etc. It is also a time to hear from PHENND staff about their activities and opportunities for partnership. This year, the theme will be youth sports and will feature brief presentations from people involved in various youth athletics programs, with particular emphasis on university-school-community partnerships.

Special Guest: Dr. Robert Malina, Professor Emeritus of Kinesiology and Health Education, University of Texas at Austin speaking on “Re-imagining Youth Sports”

Dr. Malina has had a long and prolific career.  Most recently, he was the lead author on The Physical Literacy and Project Play reports from Aspen Institute, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Read more below and see:

Full bio of Dr. Malina:

Robert M. Malina, PhD, FACSM, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin. He has earned PhD degrees in physical education (University of Wisconsin) and anthropology (University of Pennsylvania). As such, his teaching and research career has spanned anthropology and kinesiology, and includes more than 800 publications to date.  Primary areas of research are the biological growth and maturation, performance and physical activity of children and adolescents. This research has included studies of American and European youth, indigenous populations in southern Mexico, and youth athletes in a variety of sports including swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field, American football and soccer among others. He co-chaired the expert panel on Youth Physical Activity for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2003-2005) and served on the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee, Youth Health Subcommittee (2007-2008) and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, Committee on Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth (2011-2012).
