Research Program Director, Center for Parent-Teen Communication

This role is responsible for overseeing the overall strategy, management, and budget for the Center for Parent and Teen Communication (CPTC). This role will build on CPTC’s Founding Director’s vision and co-lead the Center to its next phase of growth, sustainability and impact.

The CPTC’s mission is to provide parents with the knowledge and skills needed to strengthen connections with their teens. We are committed to shifting the conversation about parenting adolescents from a “time to survive” to a “time of opportunity” in which parents can guide development. Our award-winning website ( offers evidence-informed content to support parents’ ability to implement a balanced parenting style and strength-based communication techniques. We also partner with key opinion leaders (e.g., journalists, authors, social media influencers) in the parenting community by providing them with content, strategies, and message framing tips about parenting adolescents in order to spark narrative change in their communications.

This role will lead a multidisciplinary team of staff and consultants and direct center operations, including communications, programs, partnerships, fundraising, and network building efforts. This role will be charged with strategic planning, fundraising, and identifying revenue generating opportunities in support of CPTC’s long-term impact and sustainability. This role will also represent CPTC’s mission and efforts externally within the community and to the media. The position collaborates closely with and reports to the Founding Director / Principal Investigator of CPTC. It is imperative that this role is fully aligned to the vision of CPTC and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Build upon the vision of the Founding Director by developing a multi-year strategic plan with programmatic priorities, initiatives, and measurable goals to advance CPTC’s mission
  • Lead, develop, and retain CPTC’s core management team, staff, consultants, and contributors and manage day-to-day activities through regular staff meetings
  • In partnership with CHOP’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, build a strong culture of belonging and workforce diversity, and further clarify the Center’s vision for equity, inclusion and diversity policies, programs, investments and initiatives
  • Establish indicators to measure and track CPTC’s impact on the parenting community and the public discourse surrounding the narrative about parenting adolescents
  • Regularly evaluate program components to communicate successes and advocate for changes to the strategic plan to the CPTC team, partners, funders, and potential donors
  • Integrate with and leverage the resources available through the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania

Program Strategy & Development

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and high-quality communications and systems including a detailed plan with tasks, timelines, deliverables, and budget
  • Oversee existing efforts such as multimedia content production; online marketing; an events program; and media communications
  • Launch new initiatives such as a Mission Partner program to create a network of key opinion leaders in the media (e.g., journalists, book authors, bloggers, podcast hosts, etc.) who are committed to using their platforms to change the narrative surrounding adolescence
  • Create an annual strategic plan to inform the team and partners of strategic priorities, share promising practices and lessons learned to strengthen the programs’ theory of change, strategy, activities, and communications and messaging

Fundraising, Sustainability, & Budget Management

  • Lead fundraising efforts for CPTC, including major gifts, foundation grants, donor relations, corporate sponsorships, etc. to support existing program operations and support expansion and be responsible for securing partnerships to maintain a budget of approximately $2M per year
  • Oversee the development of fundraising materials and proposals in coordination with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia development officers
  • Responsible for writing grants and letters of inquiry to potential donors. Write and review ‘science’/functional specialty portions of grant submissions. Primarily responsible for grant writing, but will work collaboratively with other team members for content expertise
  • Identify revenue-generating opportunities such as educational programs or conference grants
  • Lead engagement with funders and oversee the development of annual reports on program activities, financials, and impact
  • Oversee an annual budget of approximately $2M
  • Develop and operationalize strategies to promote organizational performance and growth including fundraising successes that engaged a wide range of stakeholders

Partner Development and Communications

  • Oversee and refine CPTC’s communication and outreach efforts such as brand development; marketing campaigns; key opinion leader partnerships; multimedia content messaging
  • Represent CTPC through public speaking and media interviews
  • Coordinate with Executive Producer and Marketing/PR team on partner cultivation and relationship management to extend the reach and impact of CPTC’s mission
  • Communicate program results and messaging to organizations, key opinion leaders, and mission partners (philanthropic and non-philanthropic)
