Quaker Voluntary Service (QVS)

Posted by on January 20, 2014

We recognize that Friends today are being invited to rediscover and reclaim the living tradition of Quaker service for our time, offering new models built on enduring truths. Quaker Voluntary Service (QVS) speaks into that need. Built on four core values: Community, Service, Transformation, and the Quaker Way, it is an experiment in faithfulness in the Friends’ tradition. QVS presents an opportunity and a challenge to discover your gifts, while helping change the world.

QVS Volunteers work full time in local nonprofits, schools, and other social justice agencies that offer direct support to marginalized individuals and communities, and strive to transform unjust systems. For examples of the service site placement possibilities in our three cities (Philadelphia, Portland, OR and Atlanta) see http://www.quakervoluntaryservice.org/current-placements/.

Through simple, communal living, Volunteers learn to care for self and others. QVS Volunteers will share living space, meals, care for the home, and all aspects of day to day life. Volunteers receive housing, all utilities, health insurance, a transportation and grocery allowance and a small living stipend. You will be supported by and engage with local Quaker communities. You are not required to be a Quaker to participate in QVS, but you should come prepared to deeply engage in Quaker worship and practice, and be genuinely open to sharing your spiritual journey with others.

Applications are due by March 15, 2014.

As Quaker service did for previous generations of Friends, this year-long experience offers the opportunity to orient young adults to whole lives committed to service and justice, grounded and sustained by faith – lives that speak. Will you let your life speak?
