Organization’s Mission and Goals

City Year’s mission is to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership, and social entrepreneurship. City Year’s youth service corps annually engages more than 1,000 young adults, ages 17 to 24, from diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. During their "City Year" corps members participate in transformative community service, break down social barriers, and inspire citizens to civic action. Many of our alumni continue to work as leaders for the common good. Over the past 15 years, more than 7,800 City Year corps members have served more than 11 million hours, impacting more than 840,000 children across the United States.

In addition to the youth service corps, City Year has pioneered many entrepreneurial concepts, including Serve-a-Thon, a model now used by other non-profits in cities across the country to engage citizens in day-long service projects and raise funds through hours pledged by volunteers. City Year has also pioneered a dynamic "action tank" model to generate and test new civic ideas, allowing our hands-on experience to contribute to the formation of national service policy. City Year has worked with every President since George H.W. Bush to support the formation of national service policy, and was a model and source of inspiration for President Clinton’s AmeriCorps program. City Year was founded in 1988 in Boston and has grown to 16 cities throughout the nation and, with the support of President Clinton and Nelson Mandela, is launching its first international program in South Africa in 2005.

Position Overview

A Project Manager, usually with the support of a senior corps member, leads 2 teamlets (14-18 corps members total). Responsible for the overall management of the day-to-day team based operations and the achievement of City Year’s service mission with the children and youth in our communities, Project Managers supervise the team, oversee the service projects, ensure a strong service impact, create opportunities for engaging outside volunteers/visitors, and support the overall efforts of City Year’s mission statement. Most teams also include 1-2 service leaders – corps members who have completed a year of AmeriCorps and have applied and been accepted for a team leadership role as a senior corps member. Project Managers manage the Service Leaders assigned to their team and work closely with them to manage and develop the team effectively.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage team of corps members

PM’s develop corps members by coaching and challenging corps members (and, when applicable, their Service Leader) in the areas of project planning, managing their peers, building relationships and developing marketable skills. This is done through daily contact, planned and surprise visits to service sites, team meetings/trainings and planning of Leadership Development Days (which take place two Fridays per month). Project managers serve as a model to their team, leading by example through disciplined work habits and positive attitude. They conduct regular performance reviews, hold one on one meetings with each CM once a month, and develop team-based activities and structured trainings to build skills for their team, as well as overseeing the educational experience of any GED candidates that may be on their team. They uphold high standards for CM’s, and are responsible for disciplining and supporting their team as well as developing strategies for retaining members. Twice yearly, they extensively evaluate their CM’s, and must carefully document both positive and deconstructive behavior and identify for the Corps Director or Program Director any CM’s that may need to be dismissed from the organization, as well as those deserving of special recognition/promotion. They must also document corps members’ weekly timesheets and track their progress toward reaching the required 1700 hours as well as ensuring that 80% of those hours are done as direct service. The PM is also responsible for managing the service leader, coaching the SL’s leadership development, holding s/he accountable to all standards and supporting their personal growth and integration into the team.

Qualifications

? Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Urban Studies, Youth Work or non profit management, or other related field
? City Year/AmeriCorps/Peace Corps experience a plus.
? Demonstrated ability to work with diverse team of young adults in educational, community service, or training organization.
? Previous experience leading, supervising, teaching or managing young adults required.
? Previous community service work experience in non-profit, social service, or educational settings required.
? Proven organizational and project management abilities.
? Ability to transform vision to strategic plan and leading Corps Members through successful implementation with clear roles, a high level of professionalism and accountability
? Ability to work as both an independent leader and a team member.
? Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
? Demonstrated proficiency in Computer skills (MSWord, MSExcel, and Powerpoint)
? Coaching, Mentoring, Training skills
? Fundraising skills.
