Presentation on Health Communication Needs of Older Immigrants

Announcement:
Join the Institute for Public Affairs and the Center for Intergenerational Learning to celebrate the publication of a new report entitled ?Patient Listening: Health Communication Needs of Older Immigrants.? Published by Project SHINE and made possible by a grant from MetLife Foundation, this report addresses critical issues related to the influence of health communication on health disparities and healthcare access among older immigrants.

Project SHINE is a national service learning initiative that builds partnerships between institutions of higher education and community-based organizations, engaging college students in service to older immigrants. Eighteen colleges and universities in fourteen cities across the country are currently participating in Project SHINE.

This presentation will include:
* Findings from focus groups, interviews and community meetings with immigrant elders and professionals in the fields of healthcare, senior services, immigration and adult education conducted in collaboration with students and faculty in Temple University?s Department of Nursing and San Jose State University?s Department of Gerontology;
* Recommendations for developing the cultural competence of health professions students through involvement in service-learning projects and;
* Information about ESL teaching materials and multilingual health resources that address health disparities by promoting effective health communication;

The presentation will be held on Tuesday, May 2 from 3-5 p.m. at Temple University Health Sciences Campus, Student-Faculty Center, 3340 N. Broad Street, Room C, 2nd Floor.
