Carolyn Pereira from the Constitutional Rights Foundation in Chicago will be delivering the plenary address.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
For a country to flourish and grow, and for a democracy to sustain liberty and justice, the next generation of citizens must acquire the civic skills, abilities and commitments to govern.

This interdisciplinary conference will draw together:
K-12 educators and counselors
University teacher educators
State coordinators and policy makers
School and University administrators
Staff from youth-serving community based organization

This would include work on:
service-learning,
moral education,
character education,
democratic education,
violence prevention,
substance abuse prevention

All attendees are expected to register for the conference. The registration fee includes two lunches and two breakfasts as well as breaks. The registration fees are discounted for people who stay in the conference hotel.

PROPOSAL DEADLINE FOR WORKSHOPS AND ROUNDTABLES
The deadline to submit proposals is 10/31/04. Potential workshops topic could examine general types of civic education like service-learning, character education, moral education or democratic education. They could also examine how to: develop student leadership, foster democratic classrooms, or work with specific student populations (class type, ages, etc.). Workshops could also focus on management issues like: involving volunteers, grant-writing, public relations or fostering partnerships with other agencies, schools or universities. Roundtables are a wonderful place for a team to discuss aspects of their specific project or program. If you have questions, please email admin@civicedconf.org.

PLENARY SPEAKER
We are delighted to have Carolyn Pereira attend the conference and give the luncheon Plenary address at the 2005 conference. Ms. Pereira is the Executive Director of the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Chicago.

CONFERENCE ON CIVIC EDUCATION RESEARCH
Though research-oriented proposals are welcome at the Practitioners’ Conference on Civic Education, a separate Conference on Civic Education Research is sponsored by the Centre. The most recent one was held in Reno, NV in September. Check the conference website for the date and location of the next Research conference which will take place in the autumn of 2005(http://www.civicedconf.org/research.html). For both conferences, the registration fee includes two lunches and two breakfasts as well as breaks. The registration fees are discounted for people who stay in the conference hotel.

REGISTER TO WIN A TRIP TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE
We will have a drawing to select one person to who will win a trip to attend the conference. The winner will receive: Paid Conference Registration; Free hotel room during the conference at the headquarters hotel (three night maximum); a $250 gift certificate from a travel agency for air travel. This does not cover the cost of any other aspects of attending the conference, nor does it cover any meals other than those included in the conference registration (two breakfasts, two lunches). The gift certificate will be provided to the winner and it can be used for any travel that the agent can provide.

The city also boasts some of the best Jazz and Blues in the country, with remarkable restaurants and nightlife. And you will find that the weather in January is quite nice in the New Orleans.
