Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative

Posted by on November 11, 2013

The school-to-prison pipeline is in full effect.

With state funds drying up for schools and pouring in for new prisons, our region is being directly affected by expanding systems of incarceration.

To address these critical issues, Bread & Roses Community Fund makes grants through the Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative to groups that organize around criminal justice reform.

Recent grantees called for important changes to the criminal justice system, including the end of solitary confinement, respect for the rights of detainees, and the repeal of laws that allow youth to be tried as adults.

The deadline for grant applications in the 2014 Phoebus cycle is coming up, and we need you to help us spread the word! Learn more about the fund and view application criteria here:

It’s a dangerous trend: less money to schools and services and more money to jails, policing, and prisons. Grassroots community organizations understand that urban areas like Philadelphia and Camden need strong, well-organized communities, not neighborhoods that are torn apart by poverty and incarceration. That’s why the Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative is so important.

The deadline to apply for grants from the Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative is Monday, December 2, at 5:00 pm. If you know of an organization interested in receiving funding, please see the link below for more information and to download an application:

At a time when so many of our tax dollars are flowing directly into prison expansion, the role of Bread & Roses in supporting criminal justice reform could not be more important. Thank you for supporting us and for helping to spread the word about this important work.
