EdFund honors Clayton, Bluford at EDDY Awards

The Philadelphia Education Fund has announced its EDDY Award winners for 2008, to be honored at the EDDY Awards on November 13th.

The EDDY’s celebrate the people and organizations whose stories exemplify the myriad successes of public education in our area.

This year’s honorees include Philadelphia native and Overbrook High School graduate, Dr. Guion S. Bluford, Jr., the former astronaut who was the first African American astronaut to fly in space.

Also being honored are Dr. Constance Clayton, the first woman and the first African American to become superintendent of the Philadelphia School District; Songhai Press, which produces culturally relevant and authentic educational materials, programs and services for educators, children and families; and the Philadelphia Youth Network, which works with hundreds of Philadelphia young people every year to help them join the regional workforce.take their rightful places as full and contributing members of the region’s workforce.

The Rising Star EDDY is given to a college student in the College Access/Philadelphia Scholars Program whose success exemplifies the unlimited potential of Philadelphia’s youth. This year, the award will be given to three remarkable sisters who are all participants in the College Access Program, are all attending college and are all recipients of a Philadelphia Scholars “Last Dollar Scholarship.”

Tracey A. Whitfield, a 2005 graduate of Bartram High School is a student at Penn State University. Joanne A. Butler, a 2007 graduate of Germantown High School, is a student at Community College of Philadelphia. Bessie T. Butler, a 2008 graduate of Germantown High School, is a student at Community College of Philadelphia. The three sisters will accept the award with their mother, their inspiration, Sara Whitfield.

The 2008 EDDY Awards will be held on November 13th at Moore College of Art at 20th Street and the Parkway.
