Pedagogies of Engagement:
Deepening Learning In and Across the Disciplines
Network for Academic Renewal Conference
April 14-16, 2005
Greater Washington, DC

Increasing students? engagement in their learning has been a central goal in science reform initiatives of the past decade, applied learning in pre-professional schools, and more student-centered classrooms in humanities, social science, and interdisciplinary studies. Research has documented the positive educational benefits of such engaged learning, and Pedagogies of Engagement: Deepening Learning In and Across the Disciplines will highlight some of the newest findings and practices in this area.

How do engaged pedagogies differ across disciplines and within interdisciplinary programs? What can be learned by comparing innovative teaching strategies within and across the disciplines? How do engaged pedagogies help improve students? understanding of the subject matter in their courses and foster habits of mind that enable students to apply that knowledge in daily life?

Pedagogies of Engagement provides an opportunity for educators to explore the emerging practices of engagement within disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields of study. What, for example, are some of the innovations that engage students within the sciences and engineering, within arts and humanities, within the fields of business and health, within interdisciplinary programs such as ethnic studies and women?s studies, or global and environmental studies? How are some of those pedagogies linking in new ways to the co-curricular lives of students through residence life, student organizations, and public programming?

We hope you can join us to share your insights and critically examine how pedagogies of engagement can deepen student knowledge and nurture habits of the mind and practice for life-long learning.
