Job Title: Program Assistant (Half-Time – 20 Hours/Week)
Term position – February-August, 2004 (7 months)

Responsible to: Executive Director

The National Coalition of Education Activists (NCEA) is a multi-racial national membership organization of parents, teachers and other school staff, union activists, teacher educators, and community activists working for equitable and excellent public schools. The NCEA supports school change efforts by helping grassroots activists gain information, contacts, and skills needed to make public schools better and more equitable. The organization also helps activists join the broader debate over public education.

Summary of Responsibilities: The program assistant is responsible for providing administrative support to the executive director in managing the day-to-day activities of the office and logistical coordination for a national conference to be held in Philadelphia, July 29-August 1, 2004.

Responsibilities:
1. Maintain databases and membership information; generate periodic reports as required. Maintain conference registration records.

2. Assist with membership outreach activities; activities include telephone contact and the preparation and coordination of mailings.

3. Make arrangements for planning meetings, including scheduling and travel arrangements.

4. Respond to conference inquiries.

5. Provide staff support to conference planning committees.

6. Communicate with outside vendors and child care provider.

7. Coordinate on-site and setup logistics, including for registration, vendor setup and volunteer support.

8. Coordinate conference publicity.

9. Other administrative duties as assigned

Requirements: Related administrative experience, facility with PC office applications including word-processing and e-mail and database management, excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, ability to work regular hours; event organizing experience; interest in the issues facing public school education useful.

Salary and Benefits: $14/hour ($280 per week) plus vacation and sick leave.
