US youth employment continues decade-long decline
A new report from Child Trends shows that employment rates for young people aged 16-24, both for those who are in school and those who are not, declined in 2009, continuing a trend that began in 2000.
The decline has been greater for students than for non-students.
As of October 2009, 45 percent of all youth in this age group were employed (in any work, either full-time or part-time). Youth enrolled in high school or college (either full-time or part-time) had employment rates of 16 and 45 percent, respectively. Those not enrolled in school had an employment rate of 63 percent. Twenty percent of youth were neither enrolled nor employed, up from 14 percent in 2008.
