The Mayor’s Alliance is applying for a joint multi-million dollar grant application to Maddie’s Fund, a private California-based family foundation that supports this type of public-private animal welfare alliance. The funding will support the activities of the City’s animal control and animal welfare that are already adopting and spaying and neutering Philadelphia’s homeless pets.

Under Maddie’s fund guidelines, the Mayor’s Alliance for Philadelphia’s Animals will serve as an umbrella organization of existing animal welfare and rescue groups. The group will also serve as the liaison between the City of Philadelphia and these groups.

This partnership between the Mayor’s Alliance for Philadelphia’s Animals and Philadelphia’s Department of Health will introduce innovative adoption and spay-neuter programs. It will replicate efforts that have successfully improved the welfare of cats and dogs in other cities.

According to Tara Derby-Perrin, President of the Mayor’s Alliance for Philadelphia’s Animals, “Through City support, these groups will gain access to new outlets for outreach and educational efforts as well as support for pet-friendly housing.” The City also encourages Philadelphia’s residents to donate time and resources to help Philadelphia’s animals.

Through this historic partnership between the Department of Health and the Mayor’s Alliance for Philadelphia’s Animals, Philadelphia joins New York City and San Francisco in the growing movement to introduce no-kill policies and programs.

Philadelphia’s participation the Mayor’s Alliance will help end the euthanization of thousands of homeless cats and dogs. It will promote fiscal responsibility by reducing the number of limited City dollars currently spent on animal control efforts, and it demonstrates how local governments can take a proactive response to the ever growing number of unwanted dogs and cats.

Tara Derby-Perrin, president of the Mayor’s Alliance for Philadelphia’s Animals, credits New York City as the inspiration for this achievement. “New York has been able to raise over $20 million dollars in the effort to save homeless animals” says Ms. Derby-Perrin. “By bringing this level of private funding to Philadelphia and reallocating resources from euthanization to spay-neuter efforts, we can end the euthanization of adoptable pets in Philadelphia.”
