National League of Cities Releases ?Lessons Learned? Report on Transitional Jobs Programs

A new report published by NLC highlights lessons learned from the YEF Institute?s 2002-2004 Transitional Jobs technical assistance project. The project assisted nine cities in designing programs to help individuals overcome barriers to employment by providing them with time-limited, wage-paying, publicly subsidized jobs combined with skill development and support services. Transitional jobs offer hard-to-employ residents ? such as homeless individuals, former offenders, welfare recipients, or at-risk youth ? an opportunity to gain the work experience and skills necessary for unsubsidized, stable employment. The efforts of the project cities provided valuable insight into the role municipal leaders can play in developing programs that strengthen the job readiness and contribute to the economic success of individuals and families.
