Lead and Assistant Art Instructors, West Philadelphia High School Summer Bridge Program

Description:
Mural Arts Program is partnering with West Philadelphia High School at 48th and Walnut Streets to offer a four week summer program to incoming freshmen. As part of WPHS’s Summer Bridge program, two groups, of 15 incoming freshmen each, will participate in academic instruction in the morning and extracurricular activities in the afternoon. Mural Arts Program is one of several community based organizations offering this extracurricular programming to complement and enrich morning curriculum offered by the school. MAP is hiring two lead and two assistant instructors

Responsibilities:
The Lead Instructor will:
• Work with WPHS staff to lead a class of 15 students in art education activities.

• Work with WPHS and MAP staff to develop a curriculum that includes exposure to Mural Arts Program, exposure to community arts, and involves youth in a larger mural project.

• Guide students in creating individual works of art

• Engage youth in their understanding of community based public art.

The Assistant Instructor will assist and support lead instructor in all above duties.

Qualifications:
• Background in art education
• Prior teaching experience, especially with middle or high school age youth
• Ability to manage a classroom of 15 students
• Commitment to engaging urban youth in the arts

Dates:
The Summer session runs for 4 weeks, from July 20 to August 14, 2009, from 1-3 pm. Instructors are required to be present 30 minutes before and after each class. Instructors will be required to attend planning meetings prior to the start of the session.

All Mural Arts educators are required to submit a PA Child Abuse Report, PA Criminal Background Check, and FBI Background Check, no more than 1 year old, upon 30 days of hire. A provisional clearance is required prior to beginning work.
