Job Opportunity: OPEN Society Executive Director

Posted by on July 12, 2002

Fund for an OPEN Society (OPEN) is seeking an Executive Director to provide dynamic staff leadership for a revitalized vision and new strategic goals. This is an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future of an organization with a proud history, a reinvigorated board, and an important mission.

OPEN is a small national not-for-profit based in Center City Philadelphia. Its mission is to promote stable, economically thriving, racially and ethnically diverse communities. OPEN’s commitment to racial integration flows from its founding by two civil rights leaders, Morris Milgram and James Farmer, over twenty-five years ago.

Recently, OPEN’s board engaged in a comprehensive strategic planning and organizational development project which resulted in a renewed commitment to OPEN’s mission along with a significant change in strategic direction. Our core strategic approach will be through education and outreach which offer us the most effective strategies to serve our mission. Our primary strategies will be 1) to create a more fertile environment for diverse communities through communications, outreach and partnerships, and educational opportunities such as conferences; and 2) to build capacity at the community level by creating a leadership training institute, tools for community leaders and consulting with individual communities.

The Executive Director will work closely with the Board to implement these goals, with special responsibility for implementing the communications and outreach strategies, as well as fund raising and management.

The Board of Directors invites qualified dynamic professionals to apply for the position of Executive Director to manage all activities of the organization including fundraising, program development, public and media relations, marketing, personnel and fiscal management. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader with knowledge of community organizing and housing/community development; an entrepreneurial approach to working in the not-for-profit sector; outstanding written and oral communications skills; special expertise in communications and media relations; excellent presentation and public speaking skills; demonstrated ability to raise funds; a commitment to outreach and partnering with other organizations as a way of doing business; and most important, a commitment to OPEN’s mission of promoting stable racially and ethnically integrated communities.
