Announcing the Twenty-third International Conference:

October 16-22, 2005, Rapid City, South Dakota

Experience the beautiful Black Hills and rich Lakota Culture!

Sponsored by The International Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership and South Dakota State University

The International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership (IPSL) is an incorporated not-for-profit organization of colleges, universities, service agencies, and related organizations united to foster and develop programs linking volunteer service and academic study. Since 1892 more than 4,000 students from over 400 colleges and universities in the U.S. and 25 other nations have participated in IPSL programs for academic credit recognized by the students’ home institution.

The 23rd International Conference of the IPSL will bring together educators and service providers from around the world to consider how service-learning lays the foundation for leadership that in turn builds stronger, healthier and more peaceful societies. Using the Lakota context as an example of such development, the conference will include lectures, discussion groups, and poster sessions; a visit to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation service-learning sites, Wounded Knee, and Red Cloud Mission; and optional sight-seeing tours to Bear Butte, Devil’s Tower, Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, and Custer State Park. The primary theme of the conference will be the value of story-telling and listening in service learning, with explorations of how American Indian cultures offer insights into refining these skills. Evening activities will include story-telling sessions and a pow-wow.
