Map-based technology is some of the fastest growing and most exciting new software on the market. It provides countless benefits to its users and can be valuable in almost every environment. FNS currently uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, a type of map-based technology, with the Healthy Access Locator (HAL); HAL is a web-based, interactive map with FNS program-related data, health data, and demographic data, including HealthierUS School Challenge winners, SNAP participation rates by State, State SNAP Outreach Plans, obesity rate data, and diabetes rate data.

In an effort to increase awareness about map-based applications and their many benefits for anti-hunger efforts, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is hosting a webinar called, “Increasing Effective Anti-Hunger Outreach Using Map-Based Technologies.”  The webinar will highlight organizations from around that country that are successfully using map-based technology in their anti-hunger outreach efforts. FNS will also provide an overview of GIS and other map-based technology, different examples of GIS maps, and effective uses of GIS and other map-based applications.

***Has your organization found an effective way to use map-based technology in its anti-hunger campaigns? FNS is looking for organizations to highlight in the upcoming webinar. If you have an innovative and successful practice using map-based applications that you would like to share with the group, please submit your entries to outreachcoalition@fns.usda.gov by Friday, September 2.  Several practices may be featured in the webinar.***
