Improving Postsecondary Education Success for Former Foster Youth

Posted by Florida College Access Network on May 7, 2019
Youth in the foster care system enroll and graduate from college at much lower rates than other students. Although Florida policies and programs are working to better support these students, more needs to be done to help them succeed. Recent policy changes sought to improve postsecondary success for this population by calling on colleges and universities to designate a foster care liaison that can guide students to needed wraparound services and other supports.

Helios Education Foundation recently published “Promoting Degree Attainment Among Former Foster Youth: An Exploration of Florida’s Policies, Programs, and Practices to Improve Postsecondary Education for Foster Youth.” Helios’ Paul Perrault and Brett McNaught of Educate Tomorrow will share highlights of the brief, including an overview of the policy landscape and examples of Florida colleges and universities supporting former foster youth via comprehensive services that go far beyond DCF tuition waivers.

In this webinar you will learn:

  • The evolving policy landscape that promotes deeper supports for former foster youth
  • Examples from Florida colleges and universities that take a comprehensive approach to helping former foster youth succeed
  • Recommendations to increase attainment for more former foster youth

Access to postsecondary education through tuition waivers isn’t enough to ensure former foster youth succeed in college. Colleges and universities that go further by providing coaching, access to services and peer mentoring are seeing better student outcomes.
