015.0 Health in All Policies beyond the basics – skill building to promote health, equity, and sustainability across sectors–Fee: $300
Sunday, November 1, 2015: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM

Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of this course is to build the capacity of state and local public health department staff and decision-makers, and public health institutes to implement Health in All Policies approaches. Participants will build skills in engaging stakeholders, decision makers, community leaders, policy experts, academics, and others in a Health in All Policies approach. Through lectures, small group activities, role plays, and discussion, participants will build skills in developing a vision for a healthy community; identifying government functions appropriate for a Health in All Polices approach; collaborating across sectors to advance health, equity, and environmental sustainability; identifying the co-benefits of non-health policies; and implementing health lens analyses. The health of our nation is in crisis: chronic disease is on the rise, health care costs are spiraling up, and inequities are growing. At the same time, we face urgent environmental problems—climate change, water shortages, the loss of habitat and other natural resources—which will pose additional health challenges. While there is an increasing recognition that the environments in which people live, work, learn, and play have a tremendous impact on health, public health agencies rarely have the mandate, authority, or organizational capacity to make these changes. Responsibility for the social determinants of health falls to many non-traditional health partners, such as housing, transportation, education, criminal justice, energy, and employment agencies. Solutions to these complex and urgent problems require collaborative efforts across many sectors and all levels, including government agencies, businesses, and community-based organizations. Health in All Policies is a collaborative approach that recognizes the complexity of these challenges and seeks to improve the health of all people by incorporating health considerations into decision-making across sectors and policy areas. However, this work requires new skills, tools, and strategies. This Institute is designed for practitioners with an understanding of the importance of “moving upstream”. Participants will be provided skill building opportunities and presentations to accelerate, deepen, and strengthen action on Health in All Policies. Given that this is an emergent approach, an additional benefit to participants will be an opportunity to learn from and network with others pioneering the implementation of this approach.

Session Objectives: Identify at least three Health in All Policies tools or resources for use with stakeholders, decision makers, and others Explain the importance of equity and environmental sustainability to the Health in All Policies approach Describe how to integrate the 5 Key Elements of Health in All Policies into current or new activities
