Applications Invited for Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program

Deadline: March 31, 2003

Founded in 1942, the American Geriatrics Society (http://www.americangeriatrics.org/) is the leading clinical society devoted to the care of older adults. Through a program funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation (http://www.jhartfound.org/) called Increasing Expertise in Geriatrics for Surgical and Related Medical Specialties, AGS seeks proposals for specialty-specific initiatives from academic training centers to develop, initiate, and evaluate programs designed to increase education for residents in the geriatrics aspect of their disciplines.

The overall project is intended to address the urgent need to create a structure for developing leaders in geriatrics in academic surgery and related medical specialties. The Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents (GESR) program allows interested specialists to work in collaboration with the geriatrics program in their institution, thereby enhancing their knowledge and skills in teaching geriatrics principles to specialist residents. Target specialties include anesthesiology; emergency medicine; general surgery; gynecology; ophthalmology; orthopaedic surgery; otolaryngology; physical medicine and rehabilitation; thoracic surgery; and urology.

Proposals must be from institutions that have well-developed academic programs in the applicant disciplines and in geriatrics. The proposal should be submitted by a member of the department in the related specialty. Two-year grants of $16,000 per year will be awarded to institutions that demonstrate in their proposals the most promise for success.

The full program brochure and application are available at the AGS Web site.
