BP Conservation Program Announces Guidelines for Future Conservationist Awards
Deadline: December 16, 2005

Since 1985, the BP Conservation Program (<a href="http://conservation.bp.com/">http://conservation.bp.com/</a>) has supported and encouraged conservation projects that address global conservation priorities at a local level. The program aims to contribute to long-term environmental conservation and sustainable development in priority areas by encouraging and engaging potential leaders in biodiversity conservation and providing opportunities for them to gain practical skills and experience.

The program is offering Future Conservationist Awards of up to $12,500 for high-potential teams that aim to develop their skills through the execution of practical conservation projects. Additional funding is also available to BPCP Award winners through Conservation Follow-Up and Conservation Leadership Awards for exceptional teams that develop innovative initiatives furthering the work of conservation projects the program has helped to seed.

Applications should address three key areas: 1) development of team capabilities and skills; 2) practical conservation projects combining research and action; and 3) demonstrable long-term conservation benefits contributing to sustainable development.

Teams may only consist of members younger than 35 years of age who have no more than two years’ professional experience, and must include a minimum of three people. Projects must be at least three months but no more than one year in length, and must take place outside countries that have ratified the Convention on the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (<a href="http://www.oecd.org/">http://www.oecd.org/</a>).

Funding requested from BPCP should form a significant component of the project’s total financial requirement. The program encourages real initiative and does not support teams joining pre-organized, existing projects developed by established organizations that are likely to proceed with or without BPCP funding.

See the program’s Web site for complete program information, application guidelines, and details on previously funded projects.
