Evictions and Poverty: Activating a Local Response to a National Crisis

Since the 2016 publication of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Princeton sociologist Matthew Desmond, there has been a rising awareness that we as a nation are experiencing an eviction crisis. This groundbreaking work has prompted many cities to begin examining the issue at home.
Locally in Philadelphia, activists, advocates, researchers, members of the media, and city officials have responded by analyzing the extent of eviction in our city, holding hearings to receive personal testimony of those who have experienced the trauma of an eviction, and most recently, convening a task force of experts to develop policy recommendations.
The July roundtable will bring together national and local experts to articulate the extent of the eviction problem and discuss possible solutions to both prevent evictions and mitigate the effects of an eviction.
Featured Presentation: Eviction Lab, Princeton University
The event will feature a keynote presentation by Ashley Gromis, Postdoctoral Research Associate with Princeton University’s Eviction Lab, a research initiative led by Matthew Desmond.
There will also be presentations from local experts on the Philadelphia context of evictions, and a presentation by Liz Hersh (OHS) and Mitchell Little (OCEO) on the recently released recommendations from the Mayor’s Task Force on Eviction Prevention and Response.
