Job Title:     ESL Coordinator
Supervisor: Director of Refugee Programming and Planning
Status:         Part Time (8 hours per week), Exempt
Flexible, 2 mornings per week, within normal business operations (9-5, Monday-Friday)
Salary:        $15.00 per hour

General Description: The ESL Coordinator will be responsible for implementing ESL classes for newly arrived refugee families and providing training and support to community volunteers. The overall goals of the ESL classes are to 1) enhance family social skills, 2) increase English language communication skills, and 3) enhance readiness for employment. Further, the ESL Coordinator will conduct training and support for community volunteers working with refugees to enhance their ability to engage families in English Language acquisition.

Summary of Responsibilities

Direct ESL Education: The ESL Coordinator will provide either one-on-one tutoring, or group/class instruction to refugee learners.
•    Conduct two classes (2 hours each) weekly for newly arrived refugees
•    Assess goals for each refugee adult attending ESL and manage instruction to meet these goals.
•    Ensure that instruction is provided at the competency level for refugee.
•    Conduct pre and post testing of all refugee learners to measure degree of change in English knowledge
•    Prepare a syllabus and daily lesson plans for each class, based on student needs.
•    Maintain attendance sheets and report of teaching materials.

Volunteer Training and Support: The ESL Coordinator will train and support community volunteers who are                     working with refugee families.
•    Conduct annual training for current community volunteers to teach skills in basic ESL instruction.
•    Provide ongoing support and resources for community volunteers working with refugee families.
•    Email volunteers monthly with new tips and ideas for incorporating ESL into their work with refugees.

Organizational:
•    Adhere to all HIAS PA agency policies.
•    Attend all HIAS PA required staff meetings
•    Work with HIAS PA management team to identify additional funding sources for program activities

Qualifications:
•    Completion of TESOL certificate program, preference given to those candidates who have 2 or more year of experience providing ESL instruction
•    Bachelor’s degree required, maters degree preferred
•    PA Criminal Background check and Child Abuse Clearances
•    Ability to work with a multicultural caseload and ethnically diverse staff
•    Ability to work independently with strong interpersonal skills
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
•    Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making practices.
•    Ability and willingness to travel to neighborhoods where refugees reside.
•    Strong organizational and time management skills.
