Engaging Democracy Through the Humanities Institute, May 24, 25 & 26, 2004 – During this Institute, participants will explore how the humanities are linked to historical roots of our democracy, as well as how their disciplines are linked to citizenship. Participants will work with key texts, selected by both participants and facilitators, which will form the basis for discussion of what it means for higher education to engage democracy. Rick Battistoni, Ph.D., a Senior Fellow with Campus Compact and author of Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum: A Resource Book for Service-Learning Faculty in All Disciplines will lead the Institute, together with three humanities faculty members from Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. Program components include time for individual syllabus revision, as well as sample models of community/curricular integration. The Institute is now open to faculty from outside Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The deadline for registration is April 30, 2004.

For more information on the Institute, please contact Cheryl Whitney Lower at Vermont Campus Compact, (802) 443-2507 or clower@middlebury.edu.
