Job Description

JEVS Human Services is currently hiring for an organized, compassionate individual to join our Career Strategies Youth team as an Education Counselor. As the Education Counselor you will be responsible for advising students and their families on the steps needed to initiate and complete the college admissions and financial aid processes. As the counselor you will provide resources and tools to navigate these processes, and develop individualized plans to help clients meet their educational and career goals.

Day to Day:

  • Provide SAT/ACT test prep and aptitude/interest assessments as needed
  • Identify colleges that match the academic credentials, interests and goals of each student; assist students in developing ideas for college essays and edit drafts; advise students on how to enhance their appeal to college admissions committees
  • Find and refer merit scholarships and assist in the application to these
  • Conduct workshops on educational issues; make public presentations related to program goals
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master degree in education or other related field preferred
  • 3+ years’ experience working with at risk youth
  • Familiarity with educational counseling and local education practices and issues
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in preparing and conducting workshops and training sessions; good communication skills with youth 14 through 21 years of age and their families
  • SAT/ACT knowledge
  • Good organizational skills and willingness to be part of a team
  • Must have own transportation
  • Flexible hours; some early evening and weekend work required
