Communications Intern, New Africa Center

The New Africa Center houses the the Muslim American Museum & Archive.

Our primary purpose is to preserve the African American Muslim rich cultural heritage and legacy to pass on to future generations.

The Communications Intern will assist in the overall development and programming of the Communications Department. The intern will help us to market the New Africa Center’s events and initiatives. Responsibilities will range from data entry & performing research to updating the website. The Communications Intern, in partnership with a staff member, will also contact members of the press to address inquiries and solicit coverage. Resourcefulness, ability to take initiative and to work both independently and as a team are vital. Candidates should be prepared to utilize strong oral and written communication skills, be creative, and complete assigned projects and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1) Media Relations
* Serve in a back-up capacity in answering media inquiries via phone and entering the inquiries into database.
* Research new media outlets and improve our database of journalists.
* Collect and keep records of NAC’s media coverage.
* Assist with sending out press releases.
2) Assistance with Events and Projects
* Assist media relations staff with the planning and execution of the NAC’s annual programs.
* Provide assistance with other events and projects as needed.
* Help create and maintain project schedule.
3) Internal/External Communication
* Write feature stories and other pieces as assigned for The New Africa Center.
* Provide writing assistance in other areas for the New Africa Center on an as-needed basis.
* Assist in writing content for the website and maintaining web pages.
* Correspond with the staff, participants, and partner organizations.
4) Marketing
* Create new marketing materials and update materials as needed.
* Organize and manage image archive to be used for marketing materials.
* Monitor and update inventories for printed materials.
* Setting up, developing and updating Facebook, Myspace, and other social networking sites for the New Africa Center.
Desired Qualifications:
* Student or recent graduate with major in communications, public relations, journalism, English or related fields
* Ability to work independently, quickly while meeting deadlines.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. (Arabic a plus)
* Keen attention to detail when proofreading, copyediting, and fact-checking.
* Technologically astute and Social Media savvy.
* Strong research, administrative and organizational skills.
* Ability to be flexible and contribute to problem-solving activities within a growing, changing organizational environment.
*Interest in and knowledge of the struggle for social justice in the African American communities; comfortable working with community-based organizations in culturally diverse neighborhoods.
