Background

YouthBuild Philadelphia is a two-year program for 18 to 20 year olds who previously dropped out of high school. During the first year of the program, students earn a competency-based high school diploma, receive vocational training, and serve as part-time AmeriCorps members. In the second year of the program, alumni receive support to pursue their postsecondary goals; this position focuses on the second year of the program and primarily works with alumni.

Job Description

The Career Coordinator is an exciting new position focused on increasing partnerships, programs and resources that increase the success and retention of alumni during the year after graduation through a pipeline of customer service positions with a clear career trajectory. The primary responsibilities of this position include:

· Employers: outreach to employers of alumni as well as in customer service/retail industries to developing mentoring by employers

· Program Design: designing systems and resources tools for job searching and preparation including identifying and developing partnerships to provide the resources

· Grant Coordination: serve as a the point person for tracking grant outcomes and coordinating with staff for the initiative

· Professional Development: co-developing & obtaining presenters for alumni professional development for alumni,

· Alumni and Student Support: while the primary focus of this role will be working on behalf of alumni/students, there will be direct support that job search advising, job coaching, and providing additional support for assigned alumni during the year after graduation.

Success is achieved when alumni are retained or advance in employment for at least a year, alumni pursue postsecondary education, employment training or leadership programs concurrently, and employers adopt a mentoring approach with alumni. Finally, the Career Coordinator also works in collaboration with school staff and partner organizations to prepare students for customer service training, their postsecondary plan, as well as bridge programs.

The successful candidate should be excited by the concept that this position will continue to evolve to meet the needs of alumni/students.

The regular hours for this position are weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with flexibility required for program schedule changes as well as for periodic evening and weekend events.

Qualifications

YouthBuild Philadelphia requires the following qualifications for this position:

§ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

§ Act 34, 114 and 151 criminal background clearances

§ At least three years of experience in working with employers (on behalf of students/clients)

§ Basic familiarity with grant funding and/or achieving metrics

§ Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well ability to integrate a wide-range of technology and data management into daily work

§ High level of professionalism and customer-service skills

§ Strong communication skills and ability to present to large groups

§ Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented project completion skills

Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate:

§ Desire to primarily focus on supporting alumni and ability to initiate contact with alumni and inactive students who are not available in the school building on a regular basis

§ Commitment to preparing students/alumni for postsecondary options and willingness to promote a wide range of education, careers, year of service, armed forces and other options

§ Ability to initiate, maintain and enhance positive partnerships with external organizations

§ Desire to operate in a highly flexible work environment and the ability to work occasional night, weekend or other variations in regular hours

§ Ability to travel to locations, organizations or events in the City of Philadelphia and surrounding counties
