Can For-Profit Corporations be Good Citizens?

Posted by on September 12, 2011

THE PENN PROGRAM ON DEMOCRACY, CITIZENSHIP, & CONSTITUTIONALISM PRESENTS:

corporations & citizenship

In his first annual message to Congress in 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed: “Great corporations exist only because they are created and safeguarded by our institutions; and it is therefore our right and our duty to see that they work in harmony with those institutions.” In the aftermath of Enron, the BP oil spill and revelations about the role of Wall Street in the recent financial collapse, what steps can be taken to ensure that for-profit business corporations act in harmony with democratic ideals? How can we best ensure that successful corporations are also good citizens? What are the roles and responsibilities of multinational corporations who often operate on a global scale? These are some of the questions we explore in the DCC program for 2011-2012.
