Call for Workshop Proposals

Now in its sixth year, the 2010 Youth Services Academy, sponsored by Pennsylvania Partners, the PA Department of Labor & Industry and the PA Workforce Investment Board, will offer practitioners and policymakers opportunities to discuss issues, develop skills and tools, and build strategies to serve youth at the local, regional and state levels.

Who Should Attend The Youth Services Academy?
The Academy is designed for youth workforce professionals, local youth council members, educators, Pennsylvania Youth in Transition (PAYT) and Regional Career Education Partnership (RCEP) coordinators and human services professionals who work with young people. Teams of individuals providing services to youth in a local workforce investment area are also encouraged to attend.

Workshop Proposals
Pennsylvania Partners, in conjunction with the PA Department of Labor & Industry and the PA Workforce Investment Board, invite you to submit a proposal to present a workshop at the upcoming Youth Services Academy (YSA) scheduled for October 26-27, 2010 at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center in State College, PA.

The YSA Planning Committee is seeking proposals that address one or more of the following issues:

Communicating with youth
Too often, as providers and staff, we instruct youth on how to communicate with adults but forget how to be mindful of better strategies we can use to communicate with youth. Proposals can address a broad range of topics including, but not limited to: how your program/organization trains staff for communicating with youth, verbal and non-verbal communication skills training, practical communication skills, using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter to reach out to youth, and gathering youth input for program delivery and design.

Ensuring a Valuable Work-Based Learning Experience
When asked what they expected most out of the programs, youth cited the importance of participating in a hands-on work-based learning experience to explore careers and learn about their own work habits, preferences, and workplace behavior. Proposals should address innovative aspects of work-based learning programs including but not limited to: work experiences, internships, extended job shadowing, matching youth with employers, interviewing activities, on-site staff visits and support, youth and employer involvement in evaluations, supervisor training, mentoring, apprenticeship models, linkages to Industry Partnerships or industry-focused programs.

Overcoming Barriers
Job preparation and job readiness entails a comprehensive support system for youth. Youth and staff cite the need for information and services related to life skills. Proposals should address topics such as how to implement individualized goal setting, managing individual crises, activities that provide applied life skills learning such as money management, navigating bus routes, buying a car, insurances, and understanding credit card debt.

Maximizing Innovative Agency/Systems Relationships and Resources
We know that the youth workforce system relies on numerous partnerships and interconnected services. Proposals should address how your program(s) partners with various entities to establish successful program models and deliver quality activities; could include but is not limited to connections to Industry Partnerships, employers, RCEPs, schools, PA CareerLinks®, private/community foundations, WIBs, Community-Based Organizations and other industry associations.

Workshop Proposal Deadline: September 9, 2010
