Call for Proposals: Eating as a Moral Act Conference

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Submission Deadline: October 15, 2003 for the symposium “Eating as a Moral Act: Ethics and Power from Agrarianism to Consumerism” on April 25-27, 2004 at University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH

The University of New Hampshire Office of Sustainability Programs is organizing an interdisciplinary symposium on “Eating as a Moral Act: Ethics and Power from Agrarianism to Consumerism.” The symposium will examine the underlying questions of justice and morality within the food and farming system. Keynote speakers will be Sidney Mintz, Marion Nestle, Brother David Andrews, Dana and Laura Jackson, and Sandy Oliver. Proposals are sought for 20-minute presentations to be delivered at four or five plenary sessions related to the symposium’s main theme. These plenary sessions may address such topics as:

Consumption, Consumerism, and Citizenship; Gender, Food and Culture; Power and Food Systems; Politics of Fat; Alternative Futures of Food Systems; Slow Food; Food in New England; From Fisheries to Aquaculture; Food Safety and Food Security; Eating the Landscape; and Religion and Food.
