Call for Papers: Environmental Justice, ENGAGE! – Apr 5

Posted by IUPUI on March 2, 2021

ENGAGE! is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original work. Manuscripts are reviewed using a double-blind peer review process. Articles are accepted on the basis of appropriateness, clarity, sound methodology, and utility for CER/CBPR. Articles are indexed or abstracted in Social Service Abstracts.  In addition, editors are open to including pieces that integrate students, inclusive of college and K-12, as co-inquirers and co-producers of knowledge alongside community partners, as well as products of creative practice that align with the goals, values, themes addressed by the journal.

Theme for this issue:  Environmental Justice

Guest Editor: Dr. Gabe Filipelli, Department of Earth Sciences, IUPUI

ENGAGE! editors invite you to submit a manuscript for the next edition of the journal focused environmental justice. According to Lutz and Neis, in Making and Moving Knowledge (2008), the principal challenge for human-kind in the 21st century will be to achieve a truly sustainable relationship with the environment while developing socio-economic and cultural systems that ensure human rights, comfort and dignity. Environmental justice, in practice, suggests an engagement with movements, “. . . expanding the conception of social justice and the reality of injustice on the ground, in the air, in one’s food, at the workplace or school, and in the playground” (Schlosberg (2013, p.51). For this issue, the scope is broad, defining environmental justice within a number of contexts. For example, a submission may describe resistance communities and community capabilities; food access and urban environments.

We also invite community-based participatory policy articles and briefs, examining how policy problems and issues are defined and constructed.  We hope to explore how issues are placed on the political and policy agenda. How do policy options emerge and why governments act or do not act? Policy briefs and articles reflecting analysis, formulation, implementation; or policy evaluation are critical to this issue.
