Edited volume on covert racism – call for abstracts of 100 words or less, due October 1, 2005

A number of scholars from a variety of different racial/ethnic backgrounds are invited to write essays from different perspectives on the subject of covert racism. The contributors would be encouraged to integrate their own lived experience. By “covert racism,” they mean racism as expressed by people who do not consider themselves as racists, usually quite the contrary. So they’re talking about “unintended” racism, with the implication that many people are racist in varying degrees, often without knowing it. The book would thus paint a more realistic and accurate portrait of racism in America today, in which latent racism only perpetuates racial inequality. This experience-driven collection of essays would also help illuminate institutional racism.

They believe this myth-breaking book would be widely adopted as a supplement in race/ethnic and inequality courses because it would offer authentic voices–primary materials, real research and points of view–that would encourage students to reach their own conclusions and thus foster active learning/critical thinking on their part.
